Guida Architetturale Completa agli Standard 3GPP NTN (da Rel-17 a Rel-20)

Technical analysis and engineering reference.

1. The Historical Paradigm Shift in 3GPP

Prior to Release 17, 3GPP mobile standards explicitly assumed stationary base stations and negligible propagation delay. Cell radius assumptions were capped at 100 kilometers, and random access preambles timed out after microseconds. In Release 17, non-terrestrial networks were codified into the mainstream cellular specifications for the very first time.

2. Key Physical Layer Specifications (TS 38.211 - TS 38.214)

The foundation of 3GPP NR-NTN rests upon critical adaptations: - Dedicated NTN operating bands in S-band (Band n255: 1626.5-1660.5 MHz UL / 1525-1559 MHz DL; Band n256: 1980-2010 MHz UL / 2170-2200 MHz DL). - Timing Advance extensions allowing handsets to advance transmission clocks by up to dozens of milliseconds. - Disabling Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) retransmissions at the MAC layer or expanding HARQ processes from 16 to 32 to prevent transmission buffer stall across high-latency space links.

3. The Path to 6G Unified Air Interfaces (Release 20)

While Release 17 and 18 adapt terrestrial 5G to space through software patches and pre-compensation, Release 20 and 6G are engineered from day one as unified 3D networks. Waveforms will natively support variable delay, extreme Doppler, and optical-sub-terahertz hybrid links without requiring proprietary transcoding gateways.
